Big thanks to Jarand Boge, Bjørn Christiansen and Bjørn Tore Økland for turning up and having their faces covered in toxic paints

Venus
Finally have a computer again, which means I can actually be bothered to update the blog again. Our latest project at school was a project on dramatisation and staging… (no idea if that is translated properly there…) and we were given the painting The Birth of Venus by Sandro Botticelli as inspiration. Our task was to do a modern twist on the image, inspired by but without being the same.
I decided to give Venus a bit of an edge, to symbolize the awesomeness of the modern woman, to show women in control rather than the sweet innocent looking Venus that Botticelli painted.
All in all I am fairly pleased with the image, but that is due to a good couple of hours in Photoshop just fixing minor things. Firstly, due to space constraints in the flat, I was unable to get the picture from straight ahead… to compensate for that I needed to use the distort tool in Photoshop, whilst making sure that my two fantastic models weren’t stretched to look like they were out of Fantastic Four. And then I “painted” the wall purple to create a better separation from the couch to give it more “oomph”.
Thanks to Martine Skrove and BT Økland for being my models, you guys were champs! (And yes, Martine a little bit more… but BT did drive an hour to and from his flat to pick up his shirt etc… so BT too!) Thanks to Bente Isefjær as well for stepping in last minute to do makeup… I think the image would have gotten a lot more of the Joker feel had I tried to do it myself. Thanks also to Martine and Bjørn Christiansen for lending me an SB-900 each (turns out I should have borrowed more :P)
Well, here’s the result:

Flash on Location
Flash… a-ah…Savior of the Universe…Flash…He save everyone of us

Tomorrow our project on using flash on location is due. The assignment was pretty open, it needed to be taken in horizontal format, and have a person or a group of people in it. As inspiration, the teacher showed us a whole bunch of David Lachapelle photos. I immediately decided I wanted something pink in my photo, and an old library-esque location. So I asked around to see if anyone knew of a good place, and through a few people I found out that Tone Constanze Ek Andreassen had used a location that matched my description perfectly, and she was lovely enough to let me know where it was. So I took the trip to Bybroen Antikvariat and asked the owner for permission, which I got no problem.
I then went out and bought lots of pink apparel, booked a stylist (Alexandra), and got hold of two models (Marie Folstad who I used for Classic Portrait, and Marte Øverby Tennøe who Bjørn Tore used for his Classic Portrait). I also got Bjørn Tore along as an assistant, and chauffeur which turned out to be very helpful as I left 2 of the flashes at home… :S
We left school early to get hold of some “geek glasses” from Sudi, and to get set up at the location. Models arrived at 16:15, got their hair and makeup done and got them dressed for the part.
In the image, I used an SB-900 flash at about 45/45 to camera right, through a softbox, an SB-800 on camera as master as well as a very weak ceiling bounce, and to camera left another SB-900 with no modifier as an edgelight/hairlight, shot through the bookshelf thanks to Bjørn Tore holding it in place (there were very steep stairs on the other side). 19:00 we packed up as the shop was closing and we didn’t want to intrude too much on the lovely man that owned the place (though he seemed to be ok with us staying longer).
With a small touch of retouching, less than I would have imagined at first… I got this result, which I am fairly happy with.

Painting with Light
This Monday we got introduced to the concept of painting with light. The school had arranged for a famous Czech photographer by the name Jan Pohribný, who is known for his megalith photos as well as his use of painting with light. It therefore became natural… (they were actually gonne give us the assignment at that point anyways) to give us the task to create some pictures where we paint with light.
I dragged BT with me to the studio to take a couple of photos, and also decided to post one without a model.
